BIOGRAPHY

Asta Kulikauskaitė Krivickienė, born in 1973 in Kaunas, Lithuania, is a painter known for her unique approach to depicting the natural world and its interplay with personal identity. She graduated with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2000, specializing inpainting.

Asta’s work is characterized by her abstract interpretations of landscapes, transforming external environments into intimate, inner worlds. Drawing on her imagination, travel experiences, sketches, and photographic material, she creates captivating scenes that transcend literal representations. Her paintings often incorporate motifs of mountains, flora, and oceans, achieved through experimental techniques with acrylic and oil, with a particular focus on the purity of painting and the dynamic relationship between colors. She also works in traditional printmaking, further expanding her artistic expression.

Since moving to Luxembourg in 2018, Asta Kulikauskaite has been actively engaged in the local art scene. She has held several solo exhibitions, including Immersion (2022, Beckerich), and has participated in group shows such as the Biennale d'Art Contemporain (2024, Strassen), Printmakers’ Choice (2025, Walferdange), and the duo exhibition Les Invités (2025, Vianden). She also contributed to Lynn Theisen’s project Landscapes for Esch 2022 – European Capital of Culture.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My artistic practice explores the relationship between humans and nature, layers of identity, and reflections of the inner world. Drawing inspiration from nature, my practice balances abstraction with recognizable forms. Walking, traveling, and observing the environment are essential to my process – they provide me with impressions, sketches, and sensations of color that later evolve into paintings. My work often begins with a feeling or a fleeting memory: a moment of déjà vu, a childhood scene, or simply the atmosphere of a place. What unfolds on the canvas is not a literal representation, but rather an inner landscape - a reflection of my state of being.

I am particularly interested in themes such as identity, ecology and the relationship between humans and nature. I want the viewer to sense the mood, to be drawn in, to feel a connection that goes beyond the visual.

I currently work mostly on larger-format canvases, where space and texture allow the landscape to breathe and envelop the viewer. However, I also create smaller works – especially in printmaking. I enjoy traditional printmaking techniques as well as monotype, which offers an intuitive and expressive way of working with color, shape and line.

The chosen materials often arise from the concept itself, and the process is a constant exploration. Texture, layering, and color are not only formal tools but also carriers of meaning.

In the early stages of my artistic journey, the theme of womanhood played a central role – exploring the female body, identity, and family. While this focus has since shifted, a woman’s perspective remains quietly embedded in the way I view and interpret the world. Recently, my work has been strongly inspired by the nature, history and natural heritage of Southern Luxembourg.
